Nicaragua unveils new type of drought-resistant rice

Xinhua, November 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nicaragua has unveiled a new variety of rice that is more resistant to drought, local media reported Friday.

The new type of rice has been presented to small- and medium-sized producers in the country's southeastern city of Nueva Guinea, an agricultural region vulnerable to drought and climate change, state news portal El 19 Digital reported.

The new rice, named INTA-Posoltega, was developed by the state-funded Nicaraguan Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA).

The rice can "yield 80 to 100 quintals (eight to 10 tons) per parcel of land (6,988.96 square meters)" and is ready for harvest in 120 days, INTA's researcher Juan Toval was quoted by the report as saying. Endi
