The UN Security Council should strengthen the macro management of peace operations to ensure that their mandates are practical and feasible with clear goals and priorities, China's permanent representative to the UN said on Friday.
At a Security Council meeting on peace operations, Liu Jieyi said that the Security Council should be able to adjust the scale and mandate of peace operations according to the development on the ground and formulate an exit strategy at an appropriate moment.
He also noted the UN should enhance the efficiency of peace operations and expedite force deployment, optimize logistic guarantee and improve the effectiveness of the use of peacekeeping resources.
"The UN should strengthen the training of peacekeepers, reinforce the discipline and monitoring of peacekeepers so as to safeguard the image of peacekeeping operations," he added.
While condemning the terrorist attack that took place in Mali earlier Friday, Liu said that terrorism is the common enemy of the whole mankind, stressing that "the international community must strengthen coordination and cooperation to fight together against terrorism."
Liu mentioned that "peace operation is an important means for maintaining international peace and security," and "China has been a firm supporter of UN peacekeeping operations."
"We are willing to work together with all parties concerned to put into practice the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and contribute more to the maintenance of international peace and security," he said. Endi
