Barcelona hosts smart city Expo

Xinhua, November 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Barcelona hosted between Nov. 17 and 19 the Smart City Expo where the latest developments and solutions for smart cities were showcased.

RosRoca, a Catalan company, presented their innovations in waste management in Barcelona. The company also manufactures equipment for waste collection.

The company ThyssenKrupp presented at the exhibition the latest technologies for lift, walkways and escalators.

Domenec Casellas, from RosRoca, told Xinhua that the system Optiaccess installed inside the rubbish bins "aims to increase the amount of organic collection per inhabitant per year." The system restricts the use of a rubbish bin to 50 people through the use of a magnetic card.

"Thanks to that, the city council can reward those neighbors who best separate the waste," Casellas said.

Another system showcased by the company was the Optifill system, which calculates the filling level of the rubbish bins and the interior temperature thanks to two different kinds of sensors located inside the bins.

In case of fire, "the sensor will send a message to the fire station, it will give the location of the rubbish bin and firemen may come directly to put out the fire," Casellas said, adding that "you can send daily information so that people in charge can decide with better accuracy when they can go collect the garbage."

Meanwhile, the company ThyssenKrupp, presented the MULTI system, a system "that allows the elevators move both vertically and horizontally".

The company also showcased the Accel gateway, "a horizontal gateway, such as the ones in airports that help connect different points in a city", the company's Humberto Azema explained to Xinhua.

The gateway has a peculiarity, Azema said, "when a person gets into it, the speed is slow but it goes progressively faster, so that people who are in the middle can go at high speed and when the person arrives at the end again, the speed slows down and the person can get out of it without risk."

The exhibition was held at the Fira Gran Via and it closed its doors on Thursday after bringing together some 500 cities, 450 exhibitors and 400 speakers. Endit
