Fiji appoints high commissioner to New Zealand

Xinhua, November 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Fijian President Jioji Konrote on Thursday commissioned Filimone Waqabaca as the Pacific island country's new high commissioner-designate to New Zealand, the government announced.

Waqabaca, former permanent secretary for Fiji's Ministry of Finance, will present his credentials to New Zealand's governor general next week, according to Fiji's Department of Information.

After the commissioning, Waqabaca said the appointment has brought a sense of excitement and nervousness but he will do his best to "deliver on what is expected of the office in New Zealand".

Waqabaca said some of the areas he will focus on will be the agricultural sector as New Zealand is a country where Fiji can learn from besides the dairy industry that Fiji is already tapping into.

The extension of seasonal employment scheme, encouraging New Zealand investment and connecting with the local Fijian community will be some of the priorities, he added.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, senior officials of the ministry and Waqabaca's family were present at the commissioning ceremony in Suva. Enditem
