The Super Bowl is the biggest event in American sports, and its iconic moments and the players who created them have reinforced its stature.
Now a book that ranks the top 50 moments in the Super Bowl history has been available at bookstores and online including Amazon.com.
"50 Years, 50 Moments: The Most Unforgettable Plays in Super Bowl History", which Randy O. Williams co-wrote with NFL legend Jerry Rice, will bring you to relive the most memorable moments in the sport's history.
The idea for the book came when Williams found himself one evening in front of television watching footage from old Super Bowl games.
"I thought, how cool would it be to get 50 years of Super Bowl stories into one book? How many of these guys are still with us? Wouldn't it be great to get their stories?" said Williams.
"That was the kickoff," he added.
Williams penned stories for Sports Illustrated, ESPN.com and etc. He also covered the NFL as both a journalist and television producer.
Before Williams started his book, he wanted to find a co-writer who would fit in his theme, which was "the greatest moments from the greatest game of the greatest sport by the greatest player".
"Here is a 3-time Super Bowl champion, a Super Bowl MVP, a Hall of Famer, but also a player that knew the pain of losing a Super Bowl which was important to me, so I knew JR was the right choice to be co-author and I was lucky enough to find that we had a shared enthusiasm for the history of the sport," he said.
When the duo decided which moments would be picked, they set a criteria in essence placing emphasis on the moment's impact on the outcome of that game and beyond.
Williams said they wanted to "peel away the layers" to tell people what they don't know about the big plays.
"What we wanted to get at here was we wanted to get inside the game, inside the moment," he said.
The book is about American football's history but it also can be interesting for those who are not so into this sport, according to Williams.
"It appeals to everybody, in addition to insightful stats and revealing photos, at its core it is about people. Those who lived the moment," he said.
"With these inside stories, readers can feel the emotion from these players in the game of their lives.
"It makes a terrific holiday gift because it does not really matter whether or not you are a hardcore football fan, it is a celebration of the human spirit." Endi
