The Myanmar government has lifted military administration order imposed in Shan state's Kokang region as situation there has returned to normalcy and maintained calm, according to an order of the President's Office published Wednesday.
The lifting of the martial law in the self-administered zone, once torn by armed clashes between the government forces and Kokang's Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), is effective from Tuesday.
The lifting of the order under state of emergency was announced in view of the return of normal administration, village tranquility and rule of law, the order said.
Myanmar government first declared a 90-day state of emergency in the region along with military administration on Feb. 17 this year following heavy fighting between the government forces and the MNDAA. The state of emergency period, which was extended for three times since then, expired on Nov. 17.
The government claimed that it has brought the Kokang region under its control following the heavy clashes.
MNDAA unilaterally declared ceasefire in June for the sake of stability and peace along the border and in view of the fact that the country's general election was then approaching.
MNDAA was not invited by the government in peace deal although the government has initially signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Accord (NCA) with eight armed groups on Oct. 15.
The ethnic side proposed MNDAA for inclusion in the signing process but the government tended to have separate talks with the group before it is done. Endit
