Political solutions key to Middle East issues: Chinese envoy

Xinhua, November 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

China believes political solutions are key to resolving issues and conflicts in the Middle East, the Chinese special envoy to the region said in the Jordanian capital on Tuesday.

Military operations and actions will not resolve the conflicts in the Middle East, Gong Xiaosheng, China's special envoy to the Middle East, said at a press conference in Amman.

"Issues in the Middle East are interrelated. Therefore, they all need to be addressed together through political solutions," he said.

Gong stressed that China supports a political solution to the situation in Syria, Yemen, Libya and the rest of the Arab world, noting that China is ready to play a larger role in the Middle East issues to help reach positive lasting solutions.

The Palestinian issue remains the core one in the Middle East, Gong said, reiterating China's support for a lasting solution in this regard.

He said China is keen on increasing coordination with Jordan on various issues.

The Chinese official is in Jordan as part of a tour that also includes the UAE and Iran.

Earlier on Monday, Gong met with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh to discuss bilateral ties and the latest developments in the Middle East.

Judeh said China as a permanent member of the UN Security Council has played a key role in the Middle East issues.

The Jordanian minister referred to Israeli aggression on Palestinian territories, which undermines peacemaking efforts, and underlined the need for the Palestinians to create an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The talks also covered efforts to combat terrorism at the international level. Endit
