First same-sex marriages take place in Ireland

Xinhua, November 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

The first same-sex marriages took place in Ireland on Tuesday after the new marriage act came into force.

Richard Dowling and Cormac Gollogly, both based in Dublin, became the first same-sex couple to get married.

The couple, who have been together for 12 years, got married in south Ireland's County Tipperary on Tuesday.

State broadcaster RTE quoted senior registrar for south Tipperary Mary Claire Heffernan as confirming that they were the first same sex couple to be civilly married in Ireland.

The couple got engaged in Spain several years ago and waited until same-sex marriage was legalized by referendum and through government legislation.

Elsewhere, Dolores Murphy and her civil partner Mabel Stoop-Murphy also got married in south Ireland's Cork city on Tuesday.

From Monday, Irish same-sex couples, including couples who are already in civil partnerships, were able to give notice of their intention to marry. Enditem
