Peruvian presidential candidate renounces U.S. citizenship

Xinhua, November 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Peruvian presidential candidate Pedro Pablo Kuczynski announced Monday that he had renounced his U.S. citizenship and returned his U.S. passport to the U.S. government, in an attempt to end controversies surrounding his double nationality.

Kuczynski showed local media a document sent by the U.S. State Department as evidence that he had renounced his U.S. nationality.

He also showed his Peruvian passport in front of TV cameras to prove he has always had Peruvian nationality.

Kuczynski served as Peru's prime minister during 2005-2006. Before that, he served in different ministerial posts. Trained as an economist, he also had extensive experience working in international organizations.

Polls showed that Kuczynski, from the Peruvians for Change Party, is the second most favored candidate for the elections slated for April 10, 2016, after Keiko Fujimori from the Popular Force (FP) party. Endit
