4 killed in separate attacks in Burundi's capital

Three criminals and one policeman were Sunday night killed in separate attacks by unidentified gunmen in the Burundian capital Bujumbura, the Burundian police spokesman said here during a press conference on Monday.
"At least four persons including a policeman and three criminals were killed in separate incidents while scores of police agents and civilians were injured in Sunday night's attacks and grenade explosions that occurred today (Monday) morning in various neighborhoods," Burundian Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye said.
Nkurikiye said policemen in a night patrol duty at Bwiza, near the city center, were attacked by unidentified gunmen.
According to him, police agents and gunmen exchanged gunfire, adding that three criminals were killed while two of them were injured and captured.
Nkurikiye added that a policeman was killed and another one injured in a gunmen's attack against a police post at Musaga in the south of the capital.
Nkurikiye also indicated that the house of Bujumbura Mayor Freddy Mbonimpa was attacked in Rohero residential area without making any human casualties.
"Unidentified gunmen blasted three grenades inside the compound of the mayor of Bujumbura. Then, there was an exchange of gunfire between the mayor's security guards and the gunmen. No one died during the clashes, but the mayor's house and two cars were slightly damaged. An unexploded device was also discovered inside the mayor's compound," said Nkurikiye.
The police spokesman added that police agents on a night patrol duty at Cibitoke in the north of the capital were attacked by criminals who blasted a grenade, injuring four policemen.
Six grenades were almost simultaneously fired on Monday morning in various places in the capital Bujumbura.
He indicated that two grenades were blasted by unidentified criminals in two separate areas at Kamenge, in the north of the capital, injuring four policemen and two civilians. Two grenades were also blasted at Buyenzi near the city center, injuring seven persons including three police agents and two more grenades were blasted at Musaga in the south of the capital without making human casualties.
Since the outbreak in April of protests against Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza's controversial third term mainly in the capital Bujumbura, police agents have been the target of armed people whose identity has not been revealed.
Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza's third term bid and his controversial re-election in July have caused the death of more than 240 and forced more than 200,000 citizens into exile in neighboring countries, namely in Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). Endit
