UN Security Council condemns deadly terrorist attacks in Beirut suburb

Xinhua, November 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Security Council on Friday condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack on Thursday in Beirut, killing at least 43 and injuring more than 240 people, said a press statement of the council.

The council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the people and government of Lebanon. The members of the Security Council wished a speedy recovery to those injured, it said.

Security sources said four suicide bombers were present in the Burj el-Barajneh area. After the first two bombers exploded themselves, a third would-be bomber survived the attack and was taken into custody. The fourth bomber was killed by locals who saw him reveal his explosives belt.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed their strong support for the stability, territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence of Lebanon.

Reaffirming that terrorism in all forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, the council reiterated their determination to combat terrorism in all forms and manifestations, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and international law, it said.

The southern suburbs of Beirut are considered the stronghold of Hezbollah, the Shiite militant party which is fighting in Syria alongside the forces of President Bashar al-Assad against Islamic fundamentalists who have threatened to target Hezbollah in his heartland.

On Thursday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement slamming the attacks and calling for "those responsible for this terrorist act to be swiftly brought to justice." Enditem
