China busts groups smuggling coal from Vietnam

China's customs on Thursday said it has netted 23 suspects for smuggling coal worth 5 billion yuan (815.66 million U.S. dollars) from Vietnam.
The suspects allegedly had smuggled about 5.61 million tonnes of coal from Vietnam into China since 2013. A total of 150 people and 20 companies were allegedly involved, and they are suspected of avoiding payment of 491 million yuan in taxes.
It is the largest smuggling ring China has broken this year, according to the General Administration of Customs.
Customs in Haikou, south China's Hainan Province, obtained information about sales of coal smuggled from Vietnam at the beginning of this year.
An investigation showed the coal entered China from Fangchenggang in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in south China and then went to Hainan, Guangdong and Zhejiang.x In a joint operation, police forces from multiple provinces arrested the suspects on Sept. 23 in Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan. Endi
