S. African ex-police officers jailed for murder

Xinhua, November 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Eeight South African ex-police officers convicted of murdering a Mozambican national were each sentenced to 15 years in prison by the High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Judge Bert Bam said the eight men did not show remorse during the trial, a factor that counted in their sentences.

There is a difference between remorse and regret, Bam stressed.

Bam said he found that life imprisonment would not be appropriate because the eight policemen had excellent service records.

Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia, 27, was tied and dragged behind a police van on February 26, 2013 in Daveyton, east of Johannesburg. He later died in police custody.

The death of Macia made international headlines after an amateur footage showing Macia being dragged through the streets of Daveyton went viral on YouTube, sparking outrage in South Africa and abroad.

The incident drew attention to rampant police brutality in South Africa.

Police said they found Macia blocking traffic by parking his vehicle on the wrong side of the street, handcuffed him to a police van and dragged him several hundred meters to the Dveyton Police Station. Enditem
