1st LD: 6.2-magnitude quake jolts off Alaska's Aleutian Islands -- USGS

Xinhua, November 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted off Alaska's chain of Aleutian Islands, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Monday.

The USGS said the quake occurred at 7:03 a.m. local time (1603 GMT), adding that the epicenter was about 93 km southeast of Atka Island, along what is called Aleutian arc, with a depth of about 10 km.

There has been so far no report of casualties or property damages from the area, as the chain of islands is sparsely populated.

The USGS has previously said the quake was measured 6.3 magnitude.

Most of seismic activities along the Aleutian arc result from thrust faulting that occurs along the interface between the Pacific and North America plates, the USGS said on its website. Endit
