UNIFIL cooperates with Lebanon in spy case

Xinhua, November 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United Nation's (UN) peacekeeping force in Lebanon is cooperating with Lebanese agencies following the arrest of one of their Lebanese employees, charged with illegal communication with Israel, Andrea Tenenti, spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), said Monday.

"Currently, the UNIFIL, Lebanese security and judicial authorities are cooperating fully to facilitate the investigation," Tenenti was quoted by the National News Agency.

He said the goal is to achieve transparency with the judicial system, adding that discussing details any further will not help legal procedures.

Tenenti said the UNIFIL is also following up on the case at the UN headquarters in New York.

Lebanese General Security busted a spy network Sunday, operated by a Syrian national identified as Ramez A., his Lebanese wife Salam Sh., and another Lebanese national, Hani M.

The suspects allegedly confessed to gathering information on specific security officials and targets within Lebanon, while taking pictures and videos of "sensitive" areas in the south and sending them to Israel.

Several Israeli spy networks have been exposed recently and the Lebanese Army dismantled and destroyed many spy devices found in the south.

In addition, Israel carries out daily drone flights over Lebanon, violating UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended Israel's 2006 war against Lebanon. Endit
