India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lost the local legislative election in the eastern state of Bihar, which is considered key for the party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consolidate power across the country, according to preliminary counting of the votes on Sunday.

The Grand Alliance of Bihar's incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar forged ahead in the battle for the 243-seat Bihar assembly, latest trends from the vote count showed.

After trailing to the BJP-led combine initially, Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and its allies Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress surged ahead. Endit
