Thousands march in Madrid to protest male violence against women

Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of the Spanish capital of Madrid on Saturday to protest against male violence against women.

Over 350 different organizations, supported by all of the country's political parties, were present in the demonstration in which it was calculated at least 50,000 people took part with 21,000 travelling to the capital from other areas in Spain in 268 busses or using cheap rail tickets which were provided by the Spanish railway operator, RENFE.

Political leaders, such as Pedro Sanchez, the leader of the Spanish Socialist (PSOE), Pablo Iglesias (Podemos) and Alberto Garzon (United Left), were all present in the march, which aimed to highlight that 1,392 women have been killed by their current or former partners since 1995.

The march was started by Angela Gonzalez, whose daughter was murdered by her former husband, outside of the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, under the banner "Against Chauvinist Violence." Endit
