Re-elected Belarus president pledges balanced foreign policy

Xinhua, November 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Re-elected Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Friday promised to adopt a balanced foreign policy, saying that his country does not want to be torn apart between the West and the East.

"We will take care of the interests of the East and the West. Just do not pull us apart, do not pit us against Russia, do not pit us against the West," Lukashenko told the swearing-in ceremony for his fifth presidential term.

Belarus will continue to build a Union State with Russia and develop fair ties within the Eurasian Economic Union and with China, he said.

Meanwhile, Belarus is open to equal cooperation and friendship with the West, including the United States and the EU, if they wish so, he added.

The Belarusian leader also asked the West to turn "a new page" in the relationship between the two sides, start with a clean slate and does not try to isolate Belarus with the help of sanctions.

Lukashenko was elected for a fifth term in office on Oct. 11 with 83.47 percent of the votes. Endi
