Croatia's pre-election poll shows two largest coalitions neck-and-neck

An opinion poll published by Croatian Nova TV on Thursday evening showed the result of parliamentary election scheduled for Sunday could be neck-and-neck for the country's two largest coalitions.

The poll conducted by Ipsos Puls, a service company for market, media and public opinion research in Croatia, to more than 4,000 citizens between Oct. 22 and Nov. 2 in 10 constituencies showed that the coalition "Croatia Is Growing", led by ruling centre-left Social Democratic Party (SDP) and incumbent Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, could take 60 seats, out of possible 140 seats.

While its main rival "Patriotic Coalition", led by opposition Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and its leader Tomislav Karamarko, could gain 57 seats, according to the poll. But analysts here noted that "Patriotic Coalition" would most likely win the 3 seats reserved for Croatian citizens living abroad.

Under Croatian laws, there are eight seats reserved for national minorities and three seats for Croatian citizens living abroad in the 151-member parliament.

Neither of the two largest coalitions could obtain an absolute majority, according to the poll. Under Croatian laws, the winner should have 76 seats in 151-member assembly to form a government. Endit
