Tokyo stocks gain in morning as yen retreats on hopes for Fed's rate hike

Tokyo shares advanced Thursday morning as investor sentiment was lifted by hopes the U.S. Federal Reserve may hike its key interest rate next month and the yen's retreat gave exporter issues a boost.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 195.51 points, or 1.03 percent, from Wednesday to end the morning session at 19,122.42, while the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange added 16.55 points, or 1.07 percent, to 1,556.98.

Among notable gainers were foods, shipping and nonferrous metals. Endit
