Mexican court approves recreational use of marijuana for small group of people

Xinhua, November 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Mexican Supreme Court of Justice on Wednesday approved the recreational use of marijuana for a small group of people, local media reported.

The decision allowed four people to cultivate, process and consume marijuana "for recreational purposes," said a report from the daily Milenio.

The four people challenged two articles of the General Health Law and appealed to the supreme court. Four of the court's five judges voted in favor of the measure, citing individual rights to choose.

Although the approval only applies to a single case, it was seen as a move to open the door for the recreational use of marijuana for other people and have wider implications in a country that is grappling with a violent drug war that the state appears to be losing.

However, the daily El Economista warned that the decision does not mean the country will allow the sale of marijuana.

"This proposal does not authorize the sale of marijuana or other narcotics or psychotropic drugs," the paper said.

Besides, the proposal does not resolve the problem of legally obtaining the cannabis seeds needed to grow marijuana. Endi
