1st LD: San Diego neighborhood shut down as gunman shoots sporadically

Xinhua, November 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

A neighborhood in the Southern California border city of San Diego was shut down Wednesday after a man with a long-range rifle fired sporadically inside an apartment building.

The man shot in different directions from the apartment complex to the street and police officers have contained him inside the building, authorities said.

The authorities shut down traffic on the ground and in the air as the San Diego International Airport is located less than two miles away.

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) also asked local residents to stay inside and avoid windows as the police officers surrounded the complex.

"Active gun fire. Residents near 2445 Brant St. Little Italy. Stay away from all windows until further notice and Shelter in place," it said via its Twitter account.

The SDPD received a phone call just after 9 a.m. local time (1700 GMT) in which a woman said the suspect called her to say that he was inside the unit.

As a precautionary measure, Washington Elementary School has been placed on lock down, it said.

The suspect was contained in a one-bedroom apartment in the building. As of 12:50 p.m.(2050 GMT), the incident has not been resolved.

No one has been reported hurt yet. Enditem
