Report says 54,000 Portuguese diagnosed with diabetes in 2014

An annual report in Portugal said more than 54,000 people were diagnosed with diabetes in Portugal in 2014 while one million more may have it but are unaware.

According to the National Diabetes Observatory Annual Report, every day 150 Portuguese were diagnosed with diabetes in Portugal in 2014.

There are about 1.1 million patients in Portugal diagnosed with diabetes and another 2 million more at risk of getting it, according to the report.

The report also said there has been an increase in health care spending from 1.30 billion to 1.55 billion euros (1.43 billion to 1.71 billion U.S. dollars) since 2013.

The report does highlight some positive aspects, including a reduction in the number of complications and hospitalizations.
