One Indian national killed, several arrested in clash with police in Nepal

Xinhua, November 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

One Indian national has been killed during a scuffle between local police and the Madhesi protesters at Birgunj, Nepal's bordering city with India on Monday, police officials said.

The 22-year-old deceased has been identified as Asis Ram Sarraf from Raxual of India, Nepal police Spokesperson Kamal Signh Bom told Xinhua.

Birgunj, a major trading point between the two countries, which has been remaining closed after India imposed an unofficial blockade against Nepal, turned battleground suddenly on Monday morning after Nepal police personnel chased away the Madhesi protesters from a bridge where they have been launching sit-in for the past one and half months.

Six policemen and dozens of protesters have also been injured when protesters clashed with the security forces deployed in the area, the spokesperson said. According to the police spokesperson, the police was also forced to lob tear gas as the protesters attacked at the police officers.

The police have detained half a dozen of protesters in which two are Indian nationals, the police said.

The exasperated protesters have burnt down the local office of Maiti Nepal, an NGO working against women trafficking in Nepal, while they also attacked the local police station based in Birgunj, Police Spokesperson Bom added. However, dozens of protesters have again occupied the bridge later in the afternoon despite intervention of the Nepal police. The local administration has clamped curfew in the city following the clash.

As many as 40 protesters including eight police personnel were killed during violent clashes with the police in the recent months in the Terai region of Himalayan nation bordering India.

The Madhesi parties have been launching movement in the Terai region expressing their dissatisfaction on demarcation of seven federal provinces adopted in the new constitution of Nepal on Sept. 20 this year.

However, rounds of talks between the Nepali government and agitating Madhesi parties for the past one month have not yielded any positive results toward ending the prevailing movement in the Terai region. Enditem
