Bolivia activates national emergency plan to tackle El Nino

Xinhua, November 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Bolivian government has activated its National Emergency Plan 2015-2016 to mitigate the consequences of El Nino, Vice Minister of Civil Defense Oscar Cabrera announced on Sunday.

The minister explained that the program includes deploying resources, infrastructure and logistics, as well as informing people of how to prepare for expected climactic events from December 2015 to March 2016.

Most of the preventive actions will be taken in the states of Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Beni and La Paz, where authorities believe up to 100,000 families could be at the risk of excessive rain.

The country has greatly improved its logistical capacity for response and would seek assistance from international organizations such as the Red Cross, according to Cabrera.

From 2006 to 2007, El Nino affected around 120,000 families in Bolivia, causing economic losses of over 440 million U.S. dollars. Endi
