50 Czech police leave for Hungary to protect Schengen borders

Fifty Czech police officers on Thursday left for Hungary where they will help to guard Schengen borders for one month.

The policemen were selected out of 400 police officers from all parts of the country who wanted to join the mission.

Czech Police chief Tomas Tuhy and Interior Minister Milan Chovanec said the mission is a new experience for these policemen because it is the first mission of its kind.

The police officers will begin work on Friday. Czech police unit's commander Marek Hruska said the units are represented by officers from the patrol, traffic and Foreign Police, together with police officers from the Criminal Investigation Police. Hruska said they also have specialists for verifying IDs.

Czech policemen are to guard the border in three areas near the town of Szeged and they will patrol jointly with a Hungarian soldier and a policeman along the border.

Czech police officers will be subordinated to the command of their Hungarian colleagues. Tuhy said their job is to protect public order and the state borders.

Czech Republic will also have over two dozen soldiers in Hungary. Endit
