Scores of Bangladeshi fishermen kidnapped by bandits

Xinhua, October 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Scores of Bangladeshi fishermen have been kidnapped by armed bandits while fishing in a secluded Bay of Bengal area off the coastal Patuakhali district, some 204 km south of capital Dhaka.

Quoting those who have narrowly escaped the attacks by jumping into the sea, Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of a local fishing boat owners' association, said "the bandits kidnapped 50 fishermen early Tuesday."

He said law enforcement agencies have been requested to rescue the fishermen.

Bangladesh Coast Guard in April 2013 recovered the bodies of 20 fishermen who were killed by pirates near Kutubdia, an island off the coastal town of Cox's Bazaar. Enditem
