Jamaica sees more murders, less other crimes

Xinhua, October 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Jamaica has reported increasing murder cases and a slight drop in other serious and violent crimes since the start of this year, according to the country's Police High Command on Monday.

Statistics from the police showed that 1,016 Jamaicans were murdered between Jan. 1 and Oct. 24, up 24 percent year on year.

The rising murder cases were mainly due to worsening security conditions in the country's rural areas, where 594 such cases were reported during the period, against 395 in 2014.

Despite the significant increase in murders, the number of shooting cases dropped slightly, to 898 from 906 in 2014.

Meanwhile, the number of rape cases during the period went down to 460 from 576, while robbery cases dipped to 1,561 from 1,833.

The statistics also showed serious and violent crimes across the Caribbean island registered an overall decline of 1 percent.

Jamaica, with a population of some 3 million, has a long history of high crime rate dating back to the 1970s. Last year, the United Nation's Office on Drugs and Crime listed the country as having the sixth highest homicide rate in the world. Endi
