Second dead from Athens flooding, ships docked across Greece

Xinhua, October 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

The dead body of a 43-year-old Greek woman was found on Saturday at a seaside suburb near Piraeus port, Greek police announced.

The mother of two children was the second victim of the flash floods that hit Athens and the wider Attica region on Thursday.

The woman went missing after leaving home to collect her kids from school. Her car was found swept away close to her home on Thursday near a district where a 41-year-old man lost his life and his 71-year-old mother was injured under similar circumstances when they were trapped in his car on the same day.

Greece has been hit by a wet front from mid-week that has caused flooding and material damages in particular in the western parts of the country, Attica and the island of Hydra which was declared in a state of emergency.

Authorities are assessing the damages, as ships are docked at ports during the weekend, since meteorologists warned that winds of up to nine Beaufort will be blowing in the Aegean Sea.

In Peloponnese peninsula hundreds of hectares of farmland have been damaged, while in Hydra and Attica hundreds of citizens rush to repair the damages in their homes and businesses. Endit
