The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on Friday opened a workshop over engaging civil society to fight against extremism and terrorism.
The two-day workshop, in cooperation with BiH Security Ministry, was attended by some 70 representatives from security agencies, non-government organizations, education institutions and medias, reported Fena, the Federal News Agency.
Jonathan Moore, head of the OSCE Mission to BiH, noted BiH adopted a counter-terrorism strategy highlighting prevention.
He said all communities should be involved in preventing extremism, often most effective at the local level, adding: "Young people must be educated about the dangers of engaging in violent extremism."
Vjekoslav Vukovic, BiH Assistant Security Minister, emphasized public trust in security institutions played a vital role to raise awareness and ensure cooperation with the authorities.
One of the terrorist threats facing BiH is some of its citizens being involved in fighting in battlefields in foreign countries, he said.
According to the BiH Security Ministry, some 130 citizens went to Syria to fight for the Islamic State (IS), with 43 of them killed and around 50 back in the country. Some people also went to eastern Ukraine to fight. Endit
