Indian gov't warns ministers to be careful in making statements

The Indian government Friday cautioned all its ministers to be very careful while making public statements.

"Ministers must be careful while making statements. We can't get away by saying the statement was misinterpreted," Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh said in the national capital.

The Home Minister's statement came in the wake of public anger over junior Foreign Minister V.K. Singh's drawing a controversial analogy on the killing of two kids from an underprivileged family.

"If someone throws stones at a dog, the government is not responsible," the Minister of State for External Affairs, also a former Indian Army chief, said Thursday.

He was responding to questions on the killing of a two-year-old boy and his 11-month-old sister on Monday, allegedly by upper caste men, in the northern state of Haryana near the national capital.

The Minister had clarified his remarks, saying, "My statement wasn't intended to draw an analogy. My men & I put our lives on the line for the nation irrespective of caste, creed and religion."

Delhi's ruling anti-graft Aam Aadmi Party has filed a police complaint against the minister, while opposition parties, including the Congress, have demanded his resignation. Endit
