Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva announced Thursday he appointed leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Pedro Passos Coelho as the new prime minister although the coalition won the Oct. 4 general election but fell short of an outright majority in the parliament.
Cavaco Silva said in a televised address to the nation that he appointed Passos Coelho as the new prime minister because he was the leader of the coalition which won the general election.
According to Portuguese constitution, the president of the country has the power to appoint a prime minister from the party or coalition which had won the general election after consultation with all political parties represented in parliament.
