Lego expands factories to meet increasing demand

Xinhua, October 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Danish toy maker Lego Group on Wednesday announced that towards 2020 it plans to expand and invest significantly in factories in Mexico, Hungary and Denmark to match the increasing demand for Lego products.

John Goodwin, CFO and Executive Vice President of the Lego Group, said the company had experienced a high global demand from children and customers, adding that the investment plans will enable Lego to reach even more children in the future with fun Lego products.

As the first step of the plans, the current Lego factory in Monterrey of Mexico will begin a massive expansion of up to 190,000 square meters in November this year, according to a statement by the company.

The investment in the factory will potentially include additional moulding, processing, packaging and warehousing and a 3-digit million euros amount.

The expansion of the factory is expected to be fully operational in 2020 and manufacturing will begin in 2018.

Lego projects the expansion in Mexico will create 3,000 new jobs by 2020.

Moreover, the Lego factory in Hungary will begin installing moulding machines during 2016 in a nearby rented facility and begin expansion of the factory with additional warehousing and processing facilities in the near future.

The expansion in Hungary will add an additional 150 employees in 2016.

Lego added it will continue the investment in Denmark where a 2-digit million euros amount will be invested in new moulding technologies in its headquarters in Billund. Endit
