9 killed, 14 injured in road mishap in southern India

Xinhua, October 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least nine people have been killed and 14 others injured in a road mishap in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a senior police official said Wednesday.

"The mishap happened late Tuesday night when a state-run bus in which the victims were travelling rammed into a stationary lorry on highway near Tiruchirappalli," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While nine passengers were killed on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious, the official said.

The passenger bus was going to Nagercoil from state capital Chennai when the incident happened, he said, adding the lorry was parked on the highway with no emergency lights switched on.

A probe has been ordered into the incident and a manhunt launched to nab the driver of the lorry, the official said. Endit
