168 candidates run for Croatian parliament

Croatian State Elections Committee (DIP) announced on Tuesday that 162 party candicates and 6 independents have registered for parliamentary elections, scheduled for Nov. 8.

DIP will check all the candidates within 48 hours from Monday midnight, the deadline of registration, then official campaign will start on Wednesday midnight.

There is a total of 151 seats in Croatian parliament, with 8 reserves for representatives for the minorities.

According to law, the voters cast their ballots in 11 constituencies, of which 10 are in Croatia with 14 seats each, while the 11th constituency with 3 seats reserved for Croatian Diaspora and Croats from neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The strongest party, centre-left Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP), has 56 seats in the current parliament and its centre-left coalition has 78 seats.

The main opposition party, centre-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), has 42 seats in the parliament. Endit
