Spain head to Ukraine with Del Bosque's future under spotlight

Xinhua, October 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Spanish national side will complete their qualifying campaign for next summer's European Championships away to the Ukraine on Monday knowing they have travelled with their job done.

Friday night's 4-0 win at home to Luxembourg assured Spain's place to defend the title they won in 2008 and 2012 and gives the side coached by Vicente del Bosque an enviable tally of eight wins and just one defeat from their nine group matches.

It came at a price however, and Spain will be without striker Alvaro Morata and midfielder David Silva, both of whom picked up injuries during Friday's win.

It had been initially thought Morata had broken his leg, but x-rays later confirmed he had just suffered a heavy blow, although it could sideline him for around a fortnight.

Del Bosque is likely to make chances to his side on Monday with Juan Mata and Paco Alcacer, who replaced the injured duo on Friday, both starting. Meanwhile David de Gea is likely to get another chance in goal, while Xabier Etxeita is in line to make his international debut.

With qualification assured the debate in Spain has now turned to Del Bosque's future after the coach, who will be 66-years old next summer has continually refused to discuss whether or not he will sign a new contract to extend what will be eight years in charge of the Spanish national side.

Central defender Marc Bartra commented to the press on Saturday that Del Bosque was the ideal man for the task, but the feeling is that he will probably reject the offer of a new contract to step down from his post. With this in mind the Spanish press have already started to debate who should succeed him with Rayo Vallecano coach, Paco Jemez and former China coach, Jose Antonio Camacho (who previously coached Spain between 1998-2002 both mentioned among the possible favorites.
