Xinhua, October 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Belarus, with its 7 million voters, started on Sunday the fifth presidential election in 21 years since it gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

The polling stations opened at 8:00 am local time (0600 GMT), and will remain open for 12 hours. The electoral register comprises over 6.9 million voters, including more than 5,700 outside the country.

The results of the election will be announced by the Central Election Commission not later than 10 days after the voting is held.

Presidential candidates include incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, Tatyana Korotkevich, activist of the campaign "Say the Truth!", Nikolai Ulakhovich, supreme hetman (military commander of the Cossacks) of the organization Belarusian Cossacks, and Sergei Gaidukevich, chairman of the Belarusian Liberal Democratic Party.

A candidate will be recognized as elected if he or she receives more than half of the vote, and the election will be recognized as valid if more than half of eligible voters take part in the polls.

According to the Central Election Commission, about 36 percent of the voters in Belarus went to presidential polls during early voting, which was held on Oct. 6-10. Endi
