Cubans eagerly await Lang Lang, Chucho Valdes concert

Xinhua, October 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cubans are waiting eagerly for a joint performance by star pianists, China's Lang Lang and Cuba's Chucho Valdes, on Friday night in Havana's Cathedral Square.

The concert is one of the most anticipated events in recent months for the island's classical music lovers, according to local specialists.

Lang Lang and Valdes will play together pieces composed by Cuban master Ernesto Lecuona (1895-1963) and other composers from Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

"We don't know what will happen in the concert. If we bring an album out later, that's great, but, right now we are concentrating on the performance," said the 73-year-old musician and winner of eight Grammy awards.

Valdes said that his 33-year-old colleague "is a complete artist."

For the occasion, the U.S. company Steinway & Sons donated a grand piano valued at over 148,000 U.S. dollars, which will be given to the Cuban Institute of Music after the concert.

"It will be a historic concert as two piano greats to perform on the same stage is not an everyday event," said Enrique Perez Mesathe, director of Cuba's National Symphonic Orchestra. Enditem
