Nepali parliament to elect new PM

Nepal will elect a new prime minister through a parliamentary vote on Sunday, officials said on Friday.
Speaker of the Nepali Parliament Subhas Chandra Nembang called a meeting of the chamber on Sunday to elect the new prime minister.
The Himalayan nation will get the 38th premier, which had promulgated a new constitution by an overwhelming majority of the Constituent Assembly on Sept. 20.
The candidates nominated by the parties must register their names for the election from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, officials at the Parliament Secretariat told Xinhua.
Under the country's constitution, one candidate should secure a simple majority to win the election of the prime minister.
Earlier on Friday, President Ram Baran Yadav had asked the parliament to start procedures to elect the prime minister in line with Nepal's newly-promulgated constitution.
The Nepali president had issued a seven-day deadline to political parties last week to choose a new prime minister on the basis of consensus. However, they failed to pick a consensual head of the government within the deadline which expired Thursday.
The Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxists Leninist), the second largest political force in the Nepali parliament, decided to field candidacy for the post of prime minister. The CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli will be its candidate in the prime ministerial election.
The third largest party in the parliament, United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), agreed to nominate CPN (UML) Chairman Oli in the upcoming election. However, other parties have not announced their candidates till Friday afternoon.
Prime minister Sushil Koirala, who was holding the post from Jan. 10, 2014, will resign from the post as required by the constitution. Endi
