Campaign to fight against sexual abuse in Beninese schools launched

Xinhua, October 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Religious leaders in Benin, especially those representing Christians, Muslims and indigenous religious groups, on Thursday launched a campaign to fight against sexual abuse in schools.

Centered on the theme "Zero tolerance for sexual abuse and violence against children," the campaign aims to eradicate the phenomena in schools.

"We do not intend to launch a short-lived campaign and then relax, but we intend to reinforce institutionalization of ideal conditions for protection of children against sexual abuse," the spokesman for Beninese religious leaders Moise Houssou said.

The campaign, he said, will be conducted within schools through sensitization, especially by use of posters that will be displayed in classrooms, staff rooms and in administration offices.

A study carried out in 2014 by Benin's ministry in charge of secondary education revealed that 1.28 out of 182 girls reported having fallen pregnant at least once. At the same time, the proportion of early pregnancy stood at 30 percent out of the 201 girls who gave their age. Enditem
