Seven Vietnamese fishermen apprehended in Philippines for poaching

Xinhua, October 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Seven Vietnamese fishermen were apprehended by Philippine Navy for poaching and illegal fishing off north Philippine province of Ilocos Norte on Thursday, local authorities said on Friday.

The fishermen were brought to Currimao town proper on Thursday night and subsequently investigated by the Philippine National Police and other government authorities, said Ilocos Norte provincial police spokesman Dexter Diovic Tamayo.

Tamayo said the fishermen, including two minors, were apprehended about 33 nautical miles west of Currimao town.

He said the seven were apprehended "for alleged illegal fishing activity within the exclusive economic zone" of the Philippines.

"Further investigation revealed that these aforementioned Vietnamese fishermen failed to present any pertinent documents pertaining to their identification," said Tamayo.

Recovered at the fishermen's boat were assorted fish.

He said the fishermen were brought to a hospital for physical and medical examination and later returned to the custody of the Navy. Endi
