Tokyo stocks open higher on overseas markets gains

Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher in early trading Friday as investor sentiment was boosted by gains in European and U.S. stocks overnight.

At 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 88.91 points, or 0.49 percent, from Thursday to 18,230.08. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 16.04 points, or 1.08 percent, to 1,497.44.

Gainers were led by iron and steel, oil and coal products and nonferrous metals. Endi
