Hungary beats Faroe Isles 2-1 in European Championship qualifier

Xinhua, October 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Hungary beat the Faroe Islands 2-1 in a European Championship Group F qualifier here on Thursday.

Both sides battled each other down to the wire, with a Hungarian goal in the 71st minute breaking a 1-1 tie to give the home team the victory.

Faroe Islands' Roaldur Jacobsen scored in the 11th minute and the Hungarians were unable to equalize until the 63rd minute when Daniel Bode, a substitute forward who only joined the action in the 46th minute, sent the ball into the net.

Bode then repeated in the 71st minute to give the Hungarian side a 2-1 lead that they held to the end of the hotly contested game.

The victory guarantees Hungary a spot among the top three teams in its group and a shot at the finals.

The top two teams from each of the nine groups go straight to the finals as does the best third-placed side. The other eight third-placed teams will compete against one another in play-offs and the best four win spots in the finals so Hungary can make it to the finals even in a worst case scenario.

Hungary's last qualifying game is an away meet against Greece on October 11 where a strong win could put it into second place. Endi
