2 wounded in explosion near police station in Cairo

An explosion in Cairo late Wednesday wounded two people, state-run news agency MENA reported Thursday.

An explosive device went off near Azbakeya police station downtown Cairo, damaging a police vehicle and a motorbike, MENA said, quoting the Interior Ministry.

Since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by the army in 2013 in response to mass protests against his one-year rule, Egypt has witnessed a spate of attacks that killed hundreds of police and army personnel.

Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, an extremist organization that has sworn allegiance to the Islamic State, has claimed responsibility of most of the attacks. Endit
