Prison without bail given to 4 IS-linked suspects in Spain

Xinhua, October 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Spanish National Court's Judge Jose de la Mata on Wednesday ordered four people arrested Sunday for forming part of an Islamic State recruitment network be sent to prison without bail to await their trial.

The two men and two women were arrested as part of a joint operation by Spanish and Moroccan security forces on Sunday, which saw six arrests also made in Morocco.

One of the men and one of the women arrested were 20 years old with the young woman living with her parents in the town of Xeraco, close to Valencia.

The other detentions in Spain were in Toledo and Badalona, which is close to Barcelona. Those arrested face charges of forming part of a terrorist organization, as well as recruitment and indoctrination for the organization.

Two of those arrested were born in Morocco, one was born in Spain of Moroccan parents while the man arrested in Toledo was born in Portugal and converted to Islam.

Judge de la Mata questioned the four on Sunday in which the Spanish media reports they denied any links with IS or any terrorist group, although they admitted accessing radical websites or communicating on issues related to Islam on social networking sites.

The Spanish Interior Ministry insists, however, that as well as recruiting for IS, the suspects also supplied logistical support for a network which extended in both Spain and Morocco and which had contact with terrorist groups in Syria. Endit
