879.4 mln passengers travel by air in EU last year: Eurostat

Xinhua, October 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

In 2014, 879.4 million passengers traveled by air in the European Union (EU), up by 4.4 percent compared with 2013 and by 16.9 percent compared to 2009, according to figures released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU on Wednesday.

Over this period, air passenger transport has steadily risen in the EU. In 2014, intra-EU transport represented 44.1 percent of total air passenger transport in the EU, followed by extra-EU transport at 38.1 percent, while national transport accounted for less than one in every five passengers.

Moreover, three people were killed in commercial air transport accidents in the EU in 2014.

In 2014, one in four air passengers was recorded in Britain, where total air passenger transport amounted to 220 million, followed by Germany, Spain, France and Italy.

As the number of air passengers carried in 2014 rose in all EU member states compared with 2013, the largest increases were registered in Greece, Luxembourg and Poland, while the lowest were observed in Latvia, the Czech Republic, Austria and France.

London-Heathrow remained the EU's busiest passenger airport in 2014, with 73.4 million passengers handled, slightly up compared with 2013.

Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt-Main and Amsterdam-Schiphol were the second, third and fourth busiest airports.

As in 2013, Heathrow handled in 2014 the most passengers on extra-EU transport, while Schiphol the most on intra-EU transport and Paris-Orly the most on national transport, said Eurostat. Endit
