UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday called for an early elections in Burkina Faso after a coup attempt last month
While meeting with Michel Kafando, transitional president of Burkina Faso, Monday, Ban expressed his sympathy for the lives lost and the many injured during the coup d'etat that took place on Sept. 16, according to the spokesperson of the secretary-general.
Kafando was temporarily held by presidential guard in the failed coup attempt.
The UN Secretary-General and Kafando exchanged views on the current situation in Burkina Faso. Ban reiterated his call on all national stakeholders to act responsibly, exercise restraint and work in the best interests of the country.
"He reaffirmed the United Nations' commitment to supporting national efforts, including for the organization of the elections. In this regard, the Secretary-General stressed that it would be essential to ensure the early holding of peaceful and credible presidential and legislative elections to allow for the swift return of constitutional order in Burkina Faso," said the spokesperson.
Elections were set on Oct. 11 with an aim to complete a transition back to democracy after a popular uprising toppled former President Compaore last year. Endit
