Beninese magistrates to call off their strike

Xinhua, October 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Benin's National Union of Magistrates (UNAMAB), whose members have been on strike for the last four weeks, will call off the strike after the government satisfactorily addressed their concerns, an official source told Xinhua Sunday.

UNAMAB will hold its general assembly on Tuesday in Cotonou to agree on suspension of the strike which was called to protest against "the illegal" manner of appointment of 40 new magistrates, the source said.

UNAMAB executive council said last Thursday, the government had temporarily halted the organization of examinations for the recruitment of 40 new magistrates until after both parties hold talks.

A strike notice issued early last month accused Benin's Justice ministry of violating the law by giving the Public Service ministry the sole mandate of organizing the recruitment of 40 new magistrates without involvement of UNAMAB.

"Before the year 2000, examinations for recruitment of magistrates was exclusively organized by the public service ministry. But from the year 2002, due to pressure from donors, the organization of the examination was jointly carried out by the ministries of public service, justice and higher education in the presence of UNAMAB," the strike notice recalled.
