Vancouver wedding show attracts brides-to-be

Xinhua, October 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Vancouver Wedding and Honeymoon Show was held here on Sunday, allowing brides-to-be to get a taste of what is on their minds for the big day.

For most people, wedding will be the largest celebration they will ever host in their life, and likely one of the biggest expenses. Planning a wedding, for some, can feel like an endless series of important decisions.

Weddings can be complicated. Young couples face many decisions about everything from venue, food and flowers to formal wear. It can all be overwhelming.

Kathy Forbes, a wedding planning expert, has written a book on wedding planning. She said the ultimate goal for couples should be planning thoroughly enough so that they can relax and feel like they are guests at their own wedding.

"They basically want an experience unique to them, and they want their guests to enjoy that experience. And basically, wedding planning -- or what happened when I got married 42 years ago -- and now, there's oops and challenges, and all that sort of stuff, and you just want to have plan-B and plan-C," she told Xinhua at the show.

Canada's annual wedding industry is now valued at around 5 billion CAD (3.75 billion U.S. dollars), with the average Canadian wedding cost at nearly 32,000 CAD (24,000 U.S. Dollars), according to Weddingbells magazine. Canadian brides spend an average of 1,700 CAD (1,275 U.S. dollars) on their wedding gown.

At Canadian weddings, it is customary for guests to bring a gift for the bride and groom. The gifts tend to be household items that the young couple would need to outfit their new home together.

A good way to get the couple a gift that you will know they want is by following a gift registry, which is like a wish list created by the couple at a store of their choice.

Karen Popoff, wedding gift consultant, said it is really coming back into being something that people want to use. A lot of younger people are starting to recognize it is a really great way to get gifts that they want and make it easier for the guests for the wedding so they do not have to worry about what to pick out.
