Mosquitoes transmitting malaria appear in Slovakia

Xinhua, October 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

A species of mosquitoes transmitting malaria has emerged in Slovakia, most likely due to the extremely hot weather in recent years, confirmed climatologist Jozef Pecho on Saturday.

"We've recorded their presence. Nevertheless, no cases of malaria have been confirmed in our territory," stressed Pecho, adding that mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles have emerged in the neighboring Czech Republic as well.

Pecho noted that the high summer temperatures also appear to be attractive for certain species of steppe spiders from the Balkans.

According to the climatologist, the extremely hot weather from the summer of 2015 is expected to become gradually a regular feature in Slovakia. It's likely that such a heat will be repeated every summer as of 2040.

"The 2015 summer was an example of the new climate standard," added Pecho. Endit
